Welcome to the one-hundred twenty-third issue of Love dA Lit! :woohoo: Every Sunday this article will aim to promote volunteer opportunities, various resources, prompts, challenges, and workshops, as well as highlighting various contests, and spotlighting a specific group or project for two weeks. This is by no means a complete list of all the literature going-ons, merely a tool to help you get involved and stay informed.

Literary Compass - Vol. 7Welcome
If one is looking for Literature, you don't need to go far on deviantART. There is a large community of writers and a plethora of work to peruse. Featuring  genres such as fantasy, mystery, horror, and romance, one would be hard-pressed to find an area not covered. However, due to the nature of the site, shorter works tend to get more focus. It's easier to quickly read a poem or a short story, and thus many of the feature articles on dA showcase those works. However, there are many novelists and serial writers among the mix, oftentimes fighting an uphill battle to have their works seen and appreciated.
With that in mind, I have started an article to spotlight some of those artists and their literary-worlds. The works covered in this feature will exclusively be long-form fiction such as novels, trilogies, etc., or fiction serials.
Editor's Note: Some people feel it is questionable when a writer who publishes an article series features their own work. Mir

LiteraryCompass/Literary Compass Article was created by mirz333 in order to showcase some of the novels and series on dA! It's a great resource to find those longer works who are tucked away in dA's lit galleries.Click here to learn a little more about this group's admins.

mirz333, the creator of the article and the founder of LiteraryCompass has put up with my mucking about to give me these wonderful answers.

:star:Can you explain a bit about your Literary Compass articles and it's accompanying group LiteraryCompass?
As a long-form fiction writer, I found it difficult to get an audience for my lit. Even though there are several groups focused on novels and serials, such as The-Novelist-Club, there weren't any ways to learn about these works. Most lit articles primarily feature short reads, which is fair since most people find it difficult to find time to read more than that. I actually had many people come to me and tell me they would read more long-form if there was a way they could learn more about the stories, the characters, and the worlds within these works, instead of just having to sift through a series of thumbnails. So, with that in mind, I began development of the Literary Compass article series.

The article publishes once every three weeks and features a new novel or series each time. There is a focus not only on the story, but features quotes, related art and an interview with the author(s). It is tailored to give potential readers a rounded look at the literary work so they can make a decision if they want to read further.

At first the LiteraryCompass group was simply going to be a placeholder for the various articles and featured art. However, we have plans to expand it to allow novelists and serialists a place they can upload and promote their works.

:star:Will you be incorporating any projects or events relating to the article? If yes, can we get a sneak peak? If not, why?
Not really a project, per se, but we have been receiving a lot of feedback from "in-between" authors. Writers who do longer form works such as limited run serials and novellas.  These works are not short-reads and often fall between the cracks, not really having a place with short stories, yet not really qualifying for groups supporting novels.  We hope to start a project reaching out to those authors to connect with the Compass.  Our goal is to publish a periodic "special feature" issue every few months which will spotlight several of those shorter works and feature mini-interviews of the authors.

:star:What has been the most rewarding thing about posting these articles and creating LiteraryCompass?
In general, the thanks I am receiving from the authors, and the community. So many long-form writers feel left out and overlooked. They are excited to see the series giving them a place to showcase their work, as well as drawing more attention to the long-form works on deviantART as a whole.  On a personal level, I love working with the authors featured and learning about their literary worlds. I have found so many great writers and reads, it's very exciting.

:star:Do you have any advice to writers posting their series or novels to deviantART?
Don't get discouraged. Getting your literature noticed is difficult under normal circumstances. Being a novelist or writing a series adds an extra challenge. Be prepared to be in for the long haul. Even the best short story writers on dA had to build their audiences. Know that it could take months, even years, to get your name and work out there. But it will happen if you stick with it.

Another thing is network and cross-promote. Find other novelists and support each other. Reaching out to each others' audiences helps you gain new fans, and gives you a chance to help out fellow writers. Sharing your trials and struggles with someone who can relate can help inspire and encourage you, and more often than not it will bring about positive results.

:star:Anything else of note that you would like to share?
Literary Compass is always looking for long-form works to feature.  This includes novels, multiple books series, as well as short story serials.  In addition, as mentioned above, we are also now looking for mid-length reads for our special features. Our FAQ gives a ton of information on what we are looking for and what it takes to qualify.  In addition, I would like to encourage people to self-suggesting! That's right. Don't wait for someone to recommend you as it may not happen. The art world is competitive, and the dA Lit world even moreso. There is nothing egotistical or wrong with wanting your work to get more looks. Drop us a line and we'll be happy to see if your lit qualifies for a feature in our article series.
